The 2020-2021 Fulbright Canada competition is open. There are several streams for faculty and students. Please consult their for more information.

The Canada-U.S. Fulbright Program operates on the principle of reciprocal exchange and provides the opportunity for outstanding American and Canadian students and scholars to study, lecture and/or conduct research in the other country.

Program Policy

For Faculty

Research Chairs and Scholar Awards

(US$25,000 per academic semester)
For awards to be taken up in the 2020-2021 academic year.
This competition closes November 15, 2019.

Faculty Eligibility

Applicants must

• Be a Canadian citizen (Permanent residence is not sufficient).
• Hold a Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree as appropriate. Candidates outside academia (e.g., professionals, artists) with recognized professional standing and substantial professional accomplishments.
• Be proficient in English.
• Be in compliance with all J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB) guidelines.
• Be in compliance with all governmental regulations regarding visas, immigration, travel and residence.

Applicants must not

• Be a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen.
• Hold permanent residency status in the United States.
• Reside in the United States.
• Have resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in the six year period immediately preceding the date of application. A period of nine months or more during a calendar year is considered to constitute a full year abroad.

For Students

Undergraduate Students

(US$5,000 per semester)
For awards to be taken up in the 2020-2021 academic year.
Opens on September 15, 2019 and closes January 31, 2020 (or by the deadline indicated by the applicant’s institution).

Graduate Students

(US$15,000 per academic year)
For awards to be taken up in the 2020-2021 academic year.
This competition closes November 15, 2019.

(US$400 to $600 per month plus tuition and room and board)

Student Eligibility

Undergraduate Students (Killam Awards)

All Canadian applicants for the Killam Fellowships Program must be Canadian citizens; be full-time undergraduate students in good standing at a degree granting institution in Canada; have met the eligibility requirements of their home university; be fluent in the English language (and/or French, where appropriate); have a superior and competitive academic record; have completed the application process prior to the published deadlines, and, in the case of the direct exchange applicants; and, be nominated by one’s home university.

Graduate Students

Applicants must

• Be a Canadian citizen (Permanent residence is not sufficient).
• Hold a Bachelor’s degree prior to the proposed start date of the grant.
• Be proficient in English.
• Be in compliance with all J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB) guidelines.
• Be in compliance with all governmental regulations regarding visas, immigration, travel and residence.

Applicants must not

• Be a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen.
• Hold permanent residency status in the United States.
• Reside in the United States.
• Have resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in the six year period immediately preceding the date of application.  A period of nine months or more during a calendar year is considered to constitute a full year abroad.
• Be seeking enrollment in a medical degree program.
• Possess a Ph.D by the start of the program. Instead, such applicants can visit the Fulbright Scholar Program.
