Active Shooter Incident

In the event of an emergency in which an Active Shooter has entered the campus grounds/building, the following procedure is recommended to be followed carefully.

In the unlikely event of an active shooter incident on campus, the following procedure should be followed.

Scan and assess your situation; safely consider your options and act with discretion. Prioritize your safety and the safety of others.

  • Run
    • Exit the building safely as soon as possible; Call 911 when it is safe to do so
    • Follow the directions of responding police.
    • Choose a safe exit, don’t attract the shooter’s attention, protect yourself first before helping others.
  • Hide. Barricade your hiding place.
    • Turn off the lights and cover the windows.
    • Lock the door and barricade it if you can. Improvise if you can’t look the door.
    • Stay out of the line of fire (hide behind desks and away from entrances)
    • Mute your phone and stay quiet – wait for the police to come to you.
    • Do not answer the door until you hear an official all clear.
  • Last resort – Fight.
    • Improvise weapons from nearby objects.
    • Commit to an aggressive physical attack.
    • Stop the threat.
